NSTC's "6G Technology Forward-Looking Layout" Aims to Cement Taiwan's Position in Telecommunications

The National Science and Technology Commission (NSTC) has announced plans to expand its investment in 6G technology, leveraging Taiwan's existing 5G and low-orbit satellite communication infrastructures. The initiative, which was presented in the NSTC's "6G Technology Forward-Looking Layout" report, aims to position Taiwan as a leader in the telecommunications industry, by investing in research and development and enhancing international cooperation in research and talent cultivation.

According to NSTC Chairman Wu Tsung-Tsong, the 6G technology will be integrated with semiconductor chips and space technology, resulting in more advanced and intricate connections between devices in the Internet of Things (IoT). By carefully strategizing the development of this cutting-edge technology, Taiwan seeks to become a world leader in the field of telecommunications, further cementing its reputation as a hub of innovation and technological excellence.

While 5G technology has only reached a penetration rate of about 25%, NSTC's initiative seeks to stay ahead of the curve. By investing in crucial research and development, the NSTC hopes to begin testing 6G technology as early as 2025. This initiative also includes fostering 6G social applications to address issues of inclusivity and resilience, promoting social equality, and sustainable economic growth in Taiwan.

In addition to this, the NSTC is collaborating with various government agencies to promote the development of next-generation communication technologies. This includes initiatives like the "Health Big Data Sustainable Platform Project" by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, which aims to improve public health, and the "Smart Agriculture Project" by the Council of Agriculture, which is helping to boost agricultural productivity through the integration of information and communication technologies.

Overall, the NSTC's forward-looking layout for 6G technology is a promising sign for Taiwan's continued leadership in the telecommunications industry. By investing in cutting-edge technology and fostering innovation, Taiwan is well-positioned to build on its reputation as a hub of technological excellence and secure a bright future in the global economy.
